A Lesson With the Rain

Tomorrow (Wednesday) is my birthday. I will be turning 13 years old. I learned that even if it is not raining when you go to bed it might rain and your stuff will get wet! I left some things on a table instead of putting it in my tent and they got wet. In Dan Boone we went on a hike. We went to the Ecology Lodge and I saw a spider in a jar. I have also been going fishing every night to get ready for the fishing tournament on Thursday night. I think our Troop has a good chance to win the tournament with Aaron, Tarrence, James and me on a team together!

Non Flushing Toliets Aren't So Bad

Today I got to shoot my first arrow in Archery. I scored 20 points out of the 6 shots that I was given. I slep in the tent for the first time all week last night. It was not too bad. I didn't know summer camp was going to be like this. When I first signed up to to summer camp I thought that I was going to be in a cabin with running water on the inside of the building. At first I was like I want to go back home. Now, I'm starting to like summer camp and sleeping outside...and using non flushing toilets is not too bad.

A Day with the Gaint Flying Killer Crickets

The thing I will remember about my first day at camp is GFKC (Gaint Flying Killer Crickets). In Dan Boone we were broken up into patrols. That is the name that the 10 Scouts in our patrol decided to call ourselves. We also made up a patrol yell that will allow people to identify who we are. The leaders in Dan Boone also made sure that every 10 minutes we were drinking water - because they did not want us to get dehydrated. We also learned how to make two types of campfires a log cabin and a tent fire. We also were able to practice our fire building skills once we got back to our campsite but we had to get one of the boys from Troop 518 who had their fireman Chip to help us. We were told we will earn our Fireman Chip at the end of the week.

My First Night At Camp With Troop 518!

Today was a great day! We arrived at camp around 4pm and then settled down into campsite 12 which on the back side of the lake. We are sharing a campsite with Troop 518 from Portland Memorial Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky. Our troop is made up of all new Scouts while Troop 518 has all older Scouts. I was able to talk to a Scout named Desmond who was telling me how he is only two Merit Badges away from getting his Eagle! He also told me about some of the camping trips that he has been on since joining Troop 518 about 5 years ago. Like going caving at Mango Cave, hiking in Red River Gorge and going camping at Camp Tunnel Mill another Boy Scout Camp in Indiana. Desmond also told me about some of the Merit Badge classes that he took at summer camp that he has enjoyed over the years.

I can't wait until tomorrow! I have signed up for Space Exploration, Archery, and Dan Boone (a program for us first year Scouts). Tomorrow Mr. Hill said he will take us fishing because I have never been fishing before. This is going to be a great week. Well, I have to go! The Scouts from 518 are building a campfire for us to roast marshmallows on and I don't want to miss out on all the fun!
